Mayo Won Splatfest, But Some Splatoon 2 Players Worry The System Is Broken

The Splatfest festivities are over and the results are in: mayo may have lost the popular vote, but it still managed to take home the prize. And yet, many salty ketchup players are calling shenanigans.

This is a good chunk of the Splatoon fandom right now:

Square Enix announced today that Dragon Quest Builders 2 is in the works, and is coming to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Details are currently scarce, but we do know that the sequel to last year’s Dragon Quest-themed building game will feature cooperative multiplayer, the ability to use a glider, and the ability to swim underwater. It has a great core to build upon, so the announcement is definitely an exciting one for fans (many of which were already happy after it was confirmed that Dragon Quest XI would be coming to North America and Europe). read more

HomePod Firmware Possibly Reveals Apple Watch With LTE and 4K Apple TV With HDR10 and Dolby Vision

HomePod Firmware Possibly Reveals Apple Watch With LTE and 4K Apple TV With HDR10 and Dolby Vision

iOS developer Guilherme Rambo‏ has discovered a reference to a 4K HDR display mode in the HomePod’s firmware, lending credence to rumors that Apple is testing a fifth-generation Apple TV capable of streaming 4K resolution video.

HomePod doesn’t have a display, and iOS devices lack the resolution for native 4K playback, so the discovery likely pertains to the Apple TV.

Rambo also discovered strings kCADisplayModeDolby and kCADisplayModeHDR10, suggesting that a 4K Apple TV could support both the Dolby Vision and HDR10 color formats for high-dynamic-range video. read more

This past month Xbox One and PS4 owners got a chance to test out Destiny 2 via the game’s open beta, and later this month PC gamers will get their turn. So, what will this version of the beta include?

The Destiny 2 PC beta is similar to console one, but there are some key differences, including a new Crucible map to try out. You can check out Bungie’s full rundown of the PC beta, below:

Last week at Bungie, we told you that the Destiny 2 PC Beta will begin in August. We promised that there would be more information to come, and it’s time to deliver the goods. The PC Beta will also include evidence of some additional tuning of the player experience. We’ve answered feedback on how often you have access to power ammo or your super abilities. These changes will be subtle. If you were onboard for the console Beta, see if you can detect them. If this is your first dance with Destiny, be sure to tell us how it feels. read more

Why the iPhone 8 may play hard to get

Why the iPhone 8 may play hard to get
iphone plus vs

As of today, Apple’s flagship phone comes in two sizes. (We’re not counting the iPhone SE.)

Apple

For the past three years, each September has brought us two new iPhones: the “regular” 4.7-inch model, and the “extra large” 5.5-inch one, with a bigger screen and better camera.

This year? A long-rumored, radically redesigned iPhone may finally be on deck. To picture it, imagine if the 5.5-inch screen of an iPhone Plus could fit in the body of a regular iPhone — but in a sleek new design without big bezels to get in the way. Rumors suggest it could have an OLED display, amped-up augmented reality capabilities and wireless (inductive) charging, too. read more

PSA: Splatoon 2’s Next Splatfest Event Starts Tonight On Switch

The first proper Splatfest in Nintendo’s colorful Switch shooter, Splatoon 2, is set to begin soon. The event kicks off in the US tonight, August 4, at 9 PM PT/12 AM ET and in the UK on August 5 at 3 PM BST.

This Splatfest runs for a full 24 hours and, like the World Premiere Demo that took place before the game released, revolves around food. This time, players are asked to choose which condiment they prefer: mayo or ketchup?

To take part in the Splatfest, simply pledge your fealty to your condiment of choice at the voting booth in Inkopolis Square, and the wins you amass in Turf War will go toward your team’s overall score. Depending on your rank by the end of the event, participants will be rewarded with a number of Super Sea Snails, rare items that can be used to add additional slots to your gear. read more

As Business Insider’s Alex Health reported on Thursday, Google has looked into buying Snapchat for as much as $30 billion.

Who knows whether this deal would ever happen? But in the meantime, it’s worth examining what such an acquisition would do for Google (besides keeping Snapchat away from Facebook).

At top of the list: a marriage of Snapchat and Google’s mega global video platform YouTube could help Google make a serious bid for the biggest prize in advertising — the $72 billion TV market. read more
