10 paid iPhone apps on sale for free right now

10 paid iPhone apps on sale for free right now

Yesterday’s roundup of Wednesday’s best paid iPhone and iPad apps on sale for free was a great one, and there are still several free downloads remaining in that post if you missed it. Of course, we’ve got a fresh new batch of limited-time sales for you to check out on Thursday, so you’ll find 10 new apps below.

This post covers paid iPhone and iPad apps that have been made available for free for a limited time by their developers. BGR is not affiliated with any developers. There is no way to tell how long they will be free. These sales could end an hour from now or a week from now — obviously, the only thing we can guarantee is that they were free at the time this post was written. If you click on a link and see a price listed next to an app instead of the word “get,” it is no longer free. The sale has ended. If you download the app anyway, you will be charged by Apple. read more

The Nintendo Switch Online App For Voice Chat Is A Disaster, But I Don’t Really Care

The Nintendo Switch Online App For Voice Chat Is A Disaster, But I Don’t Really Care

Credit: Dave Thier

The Nintendo Switch, at a bar.

Splatoon 2 may not launch for the Nintendo Switch until tomorrow, but Nintendo’s new online app for iOS and Android — essential for playing the game like a normal online shooter launched yesterday. For those that don’t know, the online app is used for voice chat, arranging private matches and tracking some in-game stats. If all that stuff sounds like something you usually don’t need an entirely separate piece of hardware for, it’s because it is. Nintendo’s online app always sounded like nonsense, and now that people are finally getting their hands on it, we seem to be able to confirm  it’s nonsense. The app has been met with near-universal scorn because the concept of using your phone for voice chat is cumbersome, convoluted and ineffective. Paul Tassi explains why in a bit more detail here.  read more

Amazon launches Spark, a social network for its shoppers

Amazon launches Spark, a social network for its shoppers
amazon-spark

Amazon Spark users are encouraged to tag images of products that are available for sale on the internet giant.

Amazon

Amazon is getting into the social media game, but this network is more about shopping than sharing pictures of your kids or latest meal.

Dubbed Spark, the new Instagram-like feature encourages Amazon customers to post images, stories and ideas about products they like. Other users can then react to the posts with comments and “smiles,” much as one would “Like” a Facebook post.

“Whether you’re looking for inspiration for home décor or seeking advice for the best long-distance running shoes, Spark makes it easy to discover — and shop — stories and ideas from a community that likes what you like,” Amazon said in an introduction to the service. read more

Nintendo Looks Set to End Two-Punch Strategy

Nintendo Looks Set to End Two-Punch Strategy

For more than two decades, Nintendo Co.’s twin product lines were the envy of its rivals: a home console and a handheld gaming device. But signs are emerging its new hybrid Switch may upend all of that.

Starting with 1989’s Game Boy, the Kyoto-based company has effectively doubled its market audience by getting gamers to buy one device for home and another for outside. That also allowed Nintendo to market consoles like the Wii as the higher-end product, with game titles costing more and averaging nine per household, versus five for handheld systems. read more

Apple Releases iOS 10.3.3 With Bug Fixes and Security Improvements [Updated]

Apple Releases iOS 10.3.3 With Bug Fixes and Security Improvements [Updated]

Apple today released iOS 10.3.3 to the public following several weeks of beta testing with six betas provided to developers and public beta testers. iOS 10.3.3 comes more than two months after the launch of iOS 10.3.2, a minor bug fix update.

iOS 10.3.3 is a free over-the-air update available to all users with a compatible iOS device. It can also be downloaded and installed on iOS devices using iTunes on a Mac or PC.

No outward-facing changes or features were discovered during the short beta testing period, so it appears iOS 10.3.3 focuses on bug fixes, security enhancements, and other minor improvements, much like iOS 10.3.2. read more

Kingdom Hearts III development team still debating whether to include Sephiroth secret boss battle

Kingdom Hearts III development team still debating whether to include Sephiroth secret boss battle

Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts II

The Kingdom Hearts III development team is still debating whether or not it will include Final Fantasy VII villain Sephiroth as a secret boss, director Tetsuya Nomura told Mirror.co.uk.

“I can’t say for certain [if there will be secret bosses],” Nomura said. “I hope, hint hint hint. I can’t say for certain. In terms of Sephiroth, do you feel like you want to battle Sephiroth again? (Laughs.)”

After some back and forth with Mirror’s Ryan Brown about how Brown’s mother plays the Kingdom Hearts series and was able to defeat Sephiroth, Nomura said, ” I don’t think I can beat him!(Laughs.) In terms of the secret boss, we can’t say anything at this time, but in terms of Sephiroth specifically, my development team are worried that we’ve had him come back so many times, so they’re maybe worried it might be redundant at this point. We’re still deliberating on it.” read more

Big Doom Update Unlocks DLC For All, Makes Welcome Revamp To Multiplayer Systems

Big Doom Update Unlocks DLC For All, Makes Welcome Revamp To Multiplayer Systems

Doom was acclaimed upon its release last year, but it was in large part due to its stellar campaign. Its multiplayer component was widely regarded as the weaker of the two components, but a new update has introduced some very welcome-sounding improvements.

Most notably, Bethesda and id Software are doing away with Doom’s $40 season pass and unlocking its multiplayer DLC for all players. That means that everyone who owns the game–or anyone who now picks it up–will get their hands on nine additional maps, three guns, three demons, and new armor and equipment options for free. You can see a trailer for the third and final DLC pack above. read more
