The 2018 Ramona-Benz S650 Maybach has a certain ring to it, don’t you think? If not for the order of four names on the birth certificate of a baby girl born in 1889 — Mercedes Adrienne Ramona Manuela Jellinek — it could very well be so. The Mercedes-Benz brand has come an infinitely long way from the heady, 19th century roots of Mercedes Jellinek and her father Emil. Mercedes has come a long way, even, from the introduction of the first car to inspire the S-Class in 1954, the W180 “Ponton” sedan. Now, some 45 years since the introduction of the W116, the first car to be officially designated an S-Class, Mercedes-Benz is rolling out the latest version of what has become a time-tested benchmark of the luxury full-size sedan segment — the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Adobe today updated its Lightroom apps for the iPad and the iPhone, introducing a new selective brush, a details tab, a refreshed interface for the iPad, and enhanced support for features like the Apple Pencil and 3D Touch.
Both Lightroom for iOS and Lightroom for iPad feature a new Selective Brush tool, which can be used to selectively paint enhancements on any part of an image. On the iPhone, the Selective Brush takes advantage of 3D Touch for pressure sensitivity, and on the iPad Pro, the Apple Pencil can be used for the same effect. The Selective Brush works with exposure, brightness, clarity, and more.
Not the founders of Mira. As their fourth year at the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy at the University of Southern California approached, they were working on prototypes and seeking funding for a new device they hoped would supercharge the young and hot augmented-reality industry.
They succeeded and landed $1.5 million in seed funding led by Sequoia Capital, and now their company, Mira, is launching an augmented-reality headset for $99, a fraction of the cost of high-end competitors like Microsoft’s HoloLens.
We’re just a few days away from San Diego Comic-Con 2017…and, more importantly, just three days away from the official unveiling of the new Zombies mode in Call of Duty: WWII. We’ve heard promising stuff about the mode thus far, and this leaked footage hasn’t done much to calm us down.
Yesterday, we reported on the news that a pair of stars would be joining the cast of the game, and that the cast would expand as we got closer to the panel. It turns out Activision has kept its word, as the official Call of Duty Twitter account has revealed the latest star to join the cast.
Microsoft is answering the persistent prayers of some of its partners by enabling them to sell subscriptions to Windows 10 that will include virtualization rights.
Microsoft announced plans for the coming new offer — which will be available from its Cloud Solution Providers starting on September 6 — at its Inspire worldwide partners conference last week. (I’ve embedded a couple of slides from one of Microsoft’s presentations at the conference on the topic.)
As of September, Microsoft will give users interested in buying Windows 10 Enterprise as a subscription a variety of options for virtualization. Microsoft also will continue to make available Windows 10 Enterprise E3 without virtualization rights for those who don’t need them.
In the past few days, more information regarding AMD’s Threadripper and EPYC Server chips have become available. Although neither are high volume markets compared to the PC market, the margins on these products, particularly server, is very high. Considering how little AMD (AMD) currently has in each segment, this is a growth opportunity for the company. Or is it?
AMD is again trying a tactic that did not work with the Bulldozer line on the desktop, trying to downplay the importance of single-threaded performance. At first they stated it was really multi-threaded performance that mattered. When this failed, and the Bulldozer line was found wanting, the company tried to convince everyone that APU processing (via HUMA) was really important. It failed to convince. Now AMD is again focusing on multi-threaded performance with the Ryzen line, but at least the single-threaded performance is significantly better than before. Oddly, due to AMD’s gimped design, the processor can have performance problems when moving beyond four cores that will impact its acceptance in certain workloads.
Creating large, harmonious and uniform color palettes can be a challenge. Good intentions and confident plans can be abandoned when things get a little unwieldy. But you can equip yourself with some tools to manage the complexity. With the right techniques, large color palettes can be created, refined and refactored at will. Quite a few techniques can be used to create large color palettes from a few base colors. Automatically generating color variations helps to keep colors uniform and easy to manage, while providing a large menu of possibilities.
Tekken 7 director Katsuhiro Harada swerved fighting game fans when he came out on stage after the Tekken Evo 2017 finals, and revealed a new trailer for Bandai Namco’s other fighting game, Dragon Ball FighterZ (he later revealed that Geese Howard was coming to Tekken). The new trailer focused on an already announced character, Trunks, but featured a bunch of new gameplay footage.
They also announced that closed beta registration will be going down later this month. On July 26, fans will be able to get register to check out Dragon Ball FighterZ. The limited version of the game will feature nine characters, and while they haven’t been specified yet, I’m sure players will get to go Super Saiyan.
While Dragon Ball FighterZ and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite were being demonstrated in Evo 2017’s raucous convention hall, the folks at Wavedash Games were quietly showing off their first official project, Icons: Combat Arena, in a private hotel room. After two years of development, they were on the verge of finally unveiling their game to the world, one they hope can be recognized as a “platform fighter” instead of a “Smash clone.”
Of course, they’re not the first to try their hands at iterating on Super Smash Bros. Melee, the 15-year-old competitive juggernaut that refuses to die. Rivals of Aether, officially released in March 2017, and Brawlhalla, which is currently in open beta, expanded on the Smash formula with ideas of their own. Icons certainly follows in their footsteps, but the developers have taken additional steps to ensure a connection with the community in which they grew up shines through every decision.
According to a Facebook spokesperson, “We are testing a complementary feed of popular articles, videos, and photos, customized for each person based on content that might be interesting to them. We’ve heard from people that they want an easy way to explore new content they haven’t connected with yet.”
The “Explore Feed” is accompanied by an icon with a rocket and is currently available under Facebook’s “More” menu. The “Explore Feed” will contain content based on pages the user already liked as well as videos and articles that are popular with the user’s friends. Overall, the “Explore Feed” seemed to offer information we were interested in when we scanned through a recent session with it. Although the feed did not contain politics or world news, it did offer local news and plenty of Game of Thrones articles.
